Pre-sea training in the merchant navy is a foundational training program designed to prepare candidates for a career at sea. This training is essential for those who wish to join the merchant navy as officers or ratings (crew members).

The duration of the Pre-Sea Training Course For General Purpose Ratings is 6 months. The course is fully residential as per the Directorate General of Shipping norms, requiring all the trainees to reside in-house. The course will cover all aspects of the seafaring profession (Deck and Engine), which also includes swimming, physical drills, workshop training, rope and mast climbing, life-saving, firefighting exercises and ship visits etc.

Those candidates who want to pursue a career in Merchant Navy as soon as passing 10thStandard can join GP Rating course. These courses help the candidates to pursue the career in Merchant Navy and help in financial growth after 6 months of Pre-sea training.

Educational Qualification & Eligibility

  • Option 1 : 10th Standard pass from government recognized board with subjects English, Mathematics & Science with 40 % aggregate. English 40% in 10th / 12th
  • Option 2 : 12th Standard (any stream) pass from government recognized board with 40 % aggregate. English 40% at 10th or 12th but with subjects English, Mathematics & Science at 10th.
  • Option 3 : Pass in 2-year ITI course (Fitter / Machinist / Mechanic / Welder / Turner) approved by DVET / NCVT; with minimum 40% aggregate marks in the final year of ITI & minimum 40% in English in 10th / 12th.
  • Age limit: Not less than 171/2 years and not more than 25 years on the date of commencement of the course.
  • Medical standards: Should be physically fit for sea and should meet the medical standards laid by the Director General of shipping.
  • Eyesight/Vision: Use of corrective lenses for eyesight is permitted but the maximum permissible limits, at entry, are 6/6 in each eye . Color blindness is not permitted.

Documents Required for Admission

  • 1. 10th Standard or higher passed certificate, showing Science, Mathematics & English as subjects.
  • 2. 10th Pass Mark-sheet for the above.
  • 3. Birth Certificate.
  • 4. School leaving Certificate.
  • 5. Passport.
  • 6. Any other certificates awarded for extra curricular activities like sports, drama, etc.
  • 7. 10 recent passport size colour photographs.
  • All the above certificates should be brought in ORIGINAL with 4 SELF ATTESTED, made in sets in the above order at the time of submission of forms. The originals will be returned after verification.
